On Saturday, April 7, Sonora ISD had a group of 8 HS and 5 MS students compete at the ASU Foreign Language festival in Spanish for their third consecutive year. As always, the students of Sonora were ready to represent our schools.

Each student had to compete in a series of events such as poetry, prose, extemporaneous speaking, and a computer reading and listening exam, along with submissions of a video and poster depicting why knowing another language helps people to be more successful. Our students competed against 10 other schools, including Talkington School for Young Women Leaders in Lubbock, C.C. Winn HS in Eagle Pass, and Marble Falls HS.

The MS 8th graders Yailin Dominguez and Jessica Campa and 6th graders Cihtlaly Delgado, Jolene Pasillas, and Atalia Ruiz received 2nd place overall, though they were one of two MS teams competing against HS students. The SHS team of Deborha Hernandez, Ezequiel Gutierrez, Viviana Arellano, Abigayl Portillo, Adamari Mata, Adriana Gonzalez, Juan Ruiz, and Melanie Perez came in 4th place overall. They both did a great job, and we are very proud of them for their hard work and dedication.

We are proud to say Sonora has always excelled in athletics, academics, and extra-curricular activities; now we feel honored to compete in these students’ native language. We look forward to doing this again next year and giving the students the opportunity to show off their talents in their native language.

We would like to take time to thank the community of Sonora for their support in our bake sale to raise funds for the students’ dinner. Big thanks to our colleagues Ms. Sam, Mrs. Love, and Mr. and Mrs. Santiago Faz for their donations; Mrs. Flanagan for helping us with technology issues; Mrs. Mayfield for the video equipment and allowing students to work on video editing; Mrs. Ewa David (Foreign Language Competition Coordinator) for helping us with questions pertaining to the competition; Mr. Leamon and Mr. Worrell for paying for these students registration fees; Mr. Trini our bus driver; the HS staff for allowing the students to practice during tutorial period; the students’ parents for making sure the students came to practice; and the students for making this possible. Thank you Mrs. Marin, Mrs. Leamon, and Mrs. Trujillo for making sure the students came to practice. You all did a FANTASTIC job and we look forward to next year.

Thank you,

Mirabel Ramírez and Leticia García
